Rehman Dakait

In the shadowy alleys of Karachi's Lyari, a name once whispered in fear, a legend born of the underworld: Sardar Abdul Rehman Baloch, better known as Rehman Dakait. He wasn't just a gangster; he was the architect of the feared, yet unspoken, Peoples' Aman Committee, a mythical figure in the city's urban landscape.
Born in 1980, the son of Dad Muhammad and Khadija Bibi, Rehman's lineage was steeped in the dark currents of drug smuggling, a trade his father and uncle had navigated since 1964. Even then, a rival known as Kala Nag cast a long shadow, a shadow eventually extinguished by a police encounter.
Rehman's own descent began early. By thirteen, he was reportedly peddling drugs, a youth marked by violence. Some accounts even suggest a chilling act in 1995: the murder of his own mother, speculated to be entangled with a rival gang. The reins of power, however, were passed to him in 2001, when he stepped into the shoes of Haji Laloo, becoming the leader of Laloo's notorious gang.
His reign, however, was destined for a violent end. On August 9th, 2009, Rehman Dakait met his fate in a hail of bullets, a shootout with the Karachi police. In the aftermath, a curious statement emerged from Zulfiqar Mirza, claiming responsibility for Dakait's demise, a confession tinged with an unsettling regret, a responsibility he readily accepted.
