Born on July 4th, 1996, Patrick Andrew Spencer is an American professional basketball player, currently making waves with the Golden State Warriors in the NBA. He also holds a two-way contract with the Santa Cruz Warriors of the NBA G League. But before the hardwood, Spencer was a force on the lacrosse field. He played college lacrosse for the Loyola Greyhounds, leaving his mark with a record-breaking 231 career assists in NCAA men's lacrosse history, earning him a reputation as one of the greatest college lacrosse players of all time. He even dipped his toes into college basketball for a year with the Northwestern Wildcats.
In high school at Boys' Latin School of Maryland, Spencer excelled in both lacrosse and basketball. As a senior, he averaged an impressive 14.3 points, 8.1 rebounds, 6.1 assists, and 2.3 steals per game. Growing to 6'2" and 190 pounds by his junior year, he was a varsity lacrosse player and a US Lacrosse High School All-American. He earned four varsity letters in both sports and was part of the Under Armour Underclass All-American team Baltimore in 2014. His senior year saw him score 49 goals and dish out 51 assists, following a junior year with 30 goals and 30 assists.
During his four years at Loyola, the lacrosse team achieved a 49-19 record, with the 2016 squad reaching the NCAA Final Four. Spencer set the college lacrosse record for career assists with 231 and the Patriot League record for career points with 380. He was recognized with the Lt. Raymond Enners Award as the USILA national player of the year and the Jack Turnbull Award as the nation's top attackman in 2019. As a senior, he also vied for the Tewaaraton Award, the "Heisman Trophy" of NCAA DI lacrosse, and ranked second on the all-time points list behind Lyle Thompson. A four-time All-American, Spencer played under head coach Charley Toomey. He made an immediate impact in his first two collegiate games, scoring eight combined points in wins against Virginia and Johns Hopkins. In 2016, he was a first-team honoree and Rookie of the Year in his league. He graduated from Loyola with a Bachelor of Business Finance.
In an interview with ESPN's Paul Carcaterra, Spencer discussed the significant influence of basketball on his lacrosse career, stating that "any time you play another sport a lot of it translates over." He elaborated, "Basketball and lacrosse are very similar, in terms of facing and trying to draw a guy and find your open teammates."
Spencer then utilized his college graduate year eligibility to play basketball at Northwestern University, where he averaged 10.4 points, 4.1 rebounds, and 3.9 assists per game.
Professionally, Spencer was drafted first overall by the Archers Lacrosse Club in the 2019 Premier Lacrosse League collegiate draft. However, he chose to pursue his basketball aspirations.
When his final college basketball season at Northwestern was cut short by the COVID-19 pandemic, Spencer headed to Germany to join the Hamburg Towers, averaging 9.2 points and 3.6 rebounds in five games.
On October 25, 2021, he signed with the Capital City Go-Go of the NBA G League.
July 25, 2022, saw Spencer sign an Exhibit 10 contract with the Golden State Warriors, followed by joining the Santa Cruz Warriors' training camp roster on October 24th. He rejoined Santa Cruz on November 29, 2023, and on February 22, 2024, he signed a two-way contract with Golden State. His NBA debut came on February 25th against the Denver Nuggets. In six games for Golden State that season, he averaged 0.7 points, 0.7 rebounds, and 0.8 assists. On March 4, 2025, his two-way contract was converted into a standard contract. He appeared in 39 games for the Warriors during the 2024–25 NBA season, averaging 2.5 points, 1.2 rebounds, and 1.2 assists. On September 29, 2025, Spencer signed a two-way contract to return to the Warriors for the 2025–26 season.
Spencer's younger brother, Cam, also played college basketball, notably winning the 2024 national championship with the UConn Huskies. Cam was drafted 53rd overall in the 2024 NBA draft by the Detroit Pistons, with his rights later traded to the Memphis Grizzlies.
