Luna and Auguste are roommates in a dormitory at Walton University. After beginning the year as friends, disagreements between them have escalated into a feud. They meet with Dean of Student Life Robyn Schilling, who tries to get them to work out their differences. She notes that things could always be worse between roommates, and begins to tell them a story that took place at Walton years earlier.
Devon Weisz is an introverted high school senior who looks forward to attending college at Walton, hoping she can move on from her awkward high school experience and make friends. At freshman orientation, she meets Celeste, a classmate whose friendliness and confidence impress her. At the end of orientation, she asks Celeste to be her roommate in the dorm for honors students, and Celeste happily agrees. Initially, the arrangement works well: the two get along with only minimal friction, and they make plans to go to Panama City for spring break with their dorm neighbors, which Devon pays for on a credit card from her parents. Devon also meets a boy at a house party she develops a crush on, who turns out to be her TA Michael. During midterms, Devon offers to help a sick Celeste by writing a paper for her. When she returns to their dorm, however, she discovers a healthy Celeste having sex with a classmate, which also causes one of Devon’s projects to be broken. Devon complains about Celeste to her parents, who encourage them to reconcile and convince Devon to invite Celeste to their family Thanksgiving after Celeste alludes to problems at home. While home for Thanksgiving, Celeste ingratiates herself with Devon’s family, including her brother Alex. Devon is tasked with watching the deep-fried turkey, but is sent inside by her grandmother Gigi. Moments later, the turkey explodes; Celeste uses the opportunity to make Devon appear irresponsible.
After returning to campus, Celeste’s passive-aggressive behavior continues, as she subtly exposes Devon’s antidepressant prescription and steals her clothing. Devon meets with her RA - a younger Robyn - to ask about switching roommates. Celeste inadvertently sees an email from Robyn about the topic, prompting her to deliver a scathing poem about Devon in their poetry class, mocking her introversion and anxiety. Meanwhile, Devon continues to develop her relationship with Michael, and is encouraged by her professor to present at WaltonCon, a school-wide competition centred around improving life on campus. At a Halloween party, she and Michael share a kiss, but the moment is interrupted when a visiting Alex becomes sick after apparently taking MDMA from Celeste, which she denies. At spring break in Panama City, Celeste secretly signs Devon up for karaoke; though she is initially nervous, she comes out of her shell and is cheered by the crowd of partiers. As an act of revenge, Celeste makes out with Michael. A devastated Devon returns to Walton, where she is comforted by Alex. While using a fake ID given to her by Celeste with Celeste’s address on it, Devon discovers that Celeste did not grow up in poverty as she claimed: her father is the CEO of Staples, and she grew up in a multi-million dollar mansion. Devon and Alex plot revenge through Devon’s WaltonCon presentation, where she exposes Celeste’s behavior and upbringing under the guise of improving dorm life.
Celeste seemingly moves out of the dorm, and takes revenge by outing Alex as gay to his high school with a fake promposal to his crush. Devon discovers that Celeste is staying in Robyn’s room and confronts her. The two fight, with Celeste revealing that she had been carrying on a relationship with Michael for months before spring break. In retaliation, Devon burns Celeste’s possessions with Robyn’s blowtorch, starting a fire that burns down the entire dorm. Celeste admits that she lied about her life in an effort to be more likeable, and that her home life isn’t without troubles: her mother has Alzheimer’s, and her father divorced her to marry a younger woman. Devon pointed out she still would have been there for her had she told her the truth.
As Robyn’s story concludes, Luna and Auguste make up, but ask what happened to the characters in the story. Robyn reveals that Celeste was expelled from several other schools, and now works at Staples after being cut off financially by her father; Michael opened a failed restaurant; Alex skipped college, and is now engaged to his former crush Peter. Finally, Devon was sentenced to two months in prison for arson. She became best friends with her cellmate Louise, and after being released, the two now run an architecture and design firm in New York City.
