Production

Development

In December 2024, MBC and Kakao Entertainment announced the production of Perfect Crown, a contemporary romance series set within an alternative-reality South Korean constitutional monarchy.[9] Developed from an award-winning script written by Yoo Ah-in from the 2022 MBC Drama Screenplay Contest,[10] the project was planned by Kang Dae-seon,[9] directed by Park Joon-hwa [ko], who helmed Alchemy of Souls (2022–23), and Bae Hee-young [ko], while Yoo Ji-won served as screenwriter.[11][7]

Casting

In December 2024, Kakao Entertainment confirmed that IU and Byeon Woo-seok would star in the series.[12] Three months after the confirmation, TV Daily reported that IU and Byeon would be leaving due to scheduling conflicts, but it was denied by their agencies.[13] In April 2025, Noh Sang-hyun and Gong Seung-yeon were cast following IU and Byeon.[4] In June 2025, Yoo Su-bin, Lee Yeon, and Chae Seo-an also joined the cast.[6][14][15]

Filming

Principal photography commenced in May 2025.[16]

Release

Perfect Crown was originally slated to premiere on MBC TV in the second half of 2025, but then it was decided to air it either at the end of the year or in 2026.[17][18][19] In November 2025, Disney+ unveiled that the series would also be available to stream on their platform.[1] In January 2026, Perfect Crown was reported for an April 3 broadcast.[7] It was then postponed by a week, and started airing on April 10 in MBC's Friday–Saturday timeslot at 21:40 (KST).[20]

Reception

Critical response

The series has received mixed reviews, with critics contrasting its predictable narrative and performances with its visual style and direction.

Tae Yu-na wrote that while Byeon Woo-seok was considered visually suitable for the role of Prince I-an, concerns were raised regarding his acting, particularly regarding his emotional scenes and expressiveness. Public reception was divided, with some viewers describing his performance as “better than expected”, while others criticized his facial expressions as “awkward” and viewed his acting as insufficient relative to his popularity.[21] In contrast, Ahn Byung-gil of Sports Kyunghyang praised IU for "leading the play" with her versatile acting, noting her ability to balance comedic and serious tones as a "trustworthy actress".[22]

Joel Keller of Decider recommended the series with a “Stream It” verdict, but noted that it follows a “pretty predictable pattern” typical of K-dramas, adding that its extended episode length makes the predictability “a tiring thing to watch”.[23] Yu Ji-hye of JTBC provided a more favorable assessment, stating that despite the “familiar flavor” of its constitutional monarchy setting and predictable power struggles, the chemistry between the leads and the direction by Park Joon-hwa enhanced its romantic appeal.[24]
