He has a brother, Guglielmo.

Junior career

Cobolli had good results on the ITF junior circuit, maintaining a 90–50 singles win-loss record.[7] He won the boys' doubles title at the 2020 French Open, with Dominic Stricker. The pair defeated eight seeds Bruno Oliveira and Natan Rodrigues in the final.[8]

He reached an ITF junior combined ranking of world No. 8 on 27 January 2020.[9]

Professional career

2021: ATP debut and first win, Two Challenger finals, Top 250 debut

Cobolli reached his maiden Challenger final at the 2021 Garden Open II in Rome, Italy where he lost to Juan Manuel Cerúndolo.

He won his first ATP match on his debut at the 2021 Emilia-Romagna Open in Parma as a wildcard defeating World No. 92 Marcos Giron.[10][11] As a result, he reached a new career-high of World No. 386 on 31 May 2021. In August he reached his second Challenger final in Barletta, Italy where he lost to compatriot Giulio Zeppieri. As a result, he entered the top 300 at No. 281 on 30 August 2021.[3]

Cobolli reached the top 250 at No. 243 on 4 October 2021.[3] He was named as alternate at the 2021 Next Generation ATP Finals.[12]

2022: Maiden Challenger title, top 150 and Masters debuts

Cobolli reached a new career high in the top 200 on 10 January 2022 at No. 199.[3] In March, he won his maiden Challenger title at the 2022 Zadar Open in Croatia. As a result, he reached the top 150 on 4 April 2022 at World No. 147.[3] Cobolli made his Masters main draw debut at the 2022 Rome Masters after receiving a wildcard into the singles and doubles main draws.[citation needed]

2023: Major debut and Maiden ATP quarterfinal, top 100

Cobolli qualified for the 2023 BMW Open and defeated Jordan Thompson in the first round and Oscar Otte in the second to reach his first ATP quarterfinal.[13] Cobolli qualified for the main draw at the Rome Masters after receiving a wildcard into the singles qualifying draw but was defeated by Arthur Rinderknech in the first round.[citation needed]

The Italian made his Major debut at the 2023 French Open, defeating Mathys Erhard, Lukas Klein and Laurent Lokoli in qualifying. In the first round he faced World No. 1 Carlos Alcaraz on Court Suzanne Lenglen and was defeated in straight sets.[citation needed]

Cobolli at the 2023 French Open

Cobolli won his second Challenger title at the 2023 Lisboa Belém Open defeating Benjamin Hassan in the final.[14] He reached the top 100 after his fifth Challenger final in Olbia, Italy at world No. 95 on 23 October 2023.[3] In November, he qualified for the 2023 Next Generation ATP Finals.[15][16] There, he defeated Dominic Stricker but lost to Arthur Fils and Luca Nardi and failed to progress to the semifinals.[citation needed]

2024: First Major third rounds & ATP finals, top 30

Cobolli qualified for the main draw to make his debut at the Australian Open.[17] He reached the third round of a Grand Slam for the first time in his career by defeating 18th seed Nicolás Jarry (his first top 20 and top 50 win)[18][19] and Pavel Kotov.[17] He lost to Alex de Minaur in the third round,[20] rising to No. 76 after the tournament.[3]

Cobolli reached his second and third ATP quarterfinals at Montpellier and Delray Beach in February.[21] He qualified for his first ATP 500 tournament at Acapulco, defeating Félix Auger-Aliassime in the opening round[22] before falling to Stefanos Tsitsipas.[23]

At the 2024 Mutua Madrid Open, Cobolli reached the third round of a Masters for the first time, defeating Alejandro Tabilo and Nicolás Jarry[21] and moving into the top 60 of the rankings for the first time on 6 May 2024.[3] At the Geneva Open, he reached his first ATP semifinal by defeating Aslan Karatsev, Ben Shelton, and Alexander Shevchenko.[citation needed] He lost to second seed and eventual champion Casper Ruud despite having match point.[24] At the French Open, he lost in the second round to Holger Rune in a fifth set tiebreak.[25] He reached the top 50 upon the conclusion of the tournament.[3]

Cobolli lost in the second round of Wimbledon to Tabilo in five sets.[26] He reached his first ATP final at Washington in July, defeating David Goffin, eight seed Alejandro Davidovich Fokina (saving 5 match points),[citation needed] 15th seed Alex Michelsen and second seed Ben Shelton en route.[21] He lost to Sebastian Korda in the final. As a result, he reached a new career high ranking of No. 33 on 5 August 2024.[27] Cobolli recorded the biggest win of his career at Cincinnati, saving three match points to defeat 10th seed Tommy Paul.[28][29] He reached a second Masters third round but was defeated by fifth seed Hubert Hurkacz in three sets.[21] Seeded at a Slam for the first time (No. 31) at the US Open he defeated James Duckworth and Zizou Bergs[17] to reach the third round, where he lost to fifth seed Daniil Medvedev in straight sets.[30]

Following the US Open, Cobolli was chosen for Italy's Davis Cup team in Bologna. He lost to Bergs in his first match but defeated Tallon Griekspoor for his first Davis Cup win.[31] The Italian represented Team Europe at the Laver Cup as first alternate. Following his participation in the exhibition tournament, he reached the top 30 on 30 September 2024.[32]

Cobolli reached the quarterfinals at Beijing, losing to Medvedev.[33] Seeded 28th at the Shanghai Masters, he defeated Stan Wawrinka before losing to his idol Novak Djokovic.[34] His season ended after he suffered a shoulder injury in the second round against Alex de Minaur.[35] He finished the year ranked No. 32.[3]

2025: First ATP titles, Wimbledon quarterfinal, top 20, Davis Cup win

Cobolli had a slow start to his 2025 season. Representing Italy at the 2025 United Cup he reached the quarterfinals, earning a comeback top 20 win over Ugo Humbert, saving match point. However, he was routinely defeated by Tomas Machac.[citation needed] This began a seven match losing streak, his longest as a professional. In the first round of the Australian Open, he lost to Tomás Etcheverry in four sets,[36] marking his first Grand Slam loss to a player ranked outside the top 20.[citation needed] Cobolli would not win another match until he entered the Phoenix Challenger in March.[37]

Cobolli arrived at the Țiriac Open in Bucharest as the third seed with a win-loss record of 3–8 for the season. He reached his second ATP Final and first on clay, defeating first seed Sebastián Báez to win the first ATP title of his career.[38]

Cobolli reached the third round of Madrid for the second year in a row after eighth seed Holger Rune retired from their second round match. The win marked Cobolli's 50th on the ATP Tour and his first over a top 10 player.[citation needed] He reached his third career ATP Final and second at ATP 500 level at the Hamburg Open.[citation needed] In the final, he defeated Andrey Rublev in straight sets, and lifted the biggest trophy of his career so far. As a result, he reached a new career high ranking of No. 26.[39][3]

At Roland Garros, Cobolli beat former US Open champion Marin Čilić and Matteo Arnaldi to reach the third round, where he lost to third seed Alexander Zverev.[citation needed]

Seeded 22nd at the Wimbledon, Cobolli defeated qualifier Beibit Zhukayev, local wildcard Jack Pinnington Jones, and 15th seed Jakub Menšík in straight sets to reach his first Slam second week. [citation needed] In the fourth round, he defeated Čilić in four tight sets to reach his first ever Grand Slam quarterfinal.[citation needed] In the quarterfinals, he lost to 7-time Wimbledon champion Novak Djokovic on Centre Court in four sets.[40] Nonetheless, this result guaranteed him a new career high ranking of world No. 19 on 14 July 2025;[41] two weeks later, he had risen to No. 17.[3]

At Toronto, Cobolli reached the round of 16 for the first time at a Masters event, losing to eventual champion Ben Shelton in three sets. Seeded 24th at the US Open, he retired trailing against Lorenzo Musetti in the third round.[citation needed]

Cobolli played his first Laver Cup match in September, losing to João Fonseca. In November 2025, he competed at the 2025 Davis Cup Finals. After the withdrawal of Jannik Sinner and Lorenzo Musetti, he was the Italian number one leading the team - with Matteo Berrettini - to achieve the third Davis Cup win in a row and winning it against Spain, without losing a match in the entire competition.[42] He ended the year ranked No. 22.[3]

2026: French Open semifinal, top 10

Cobolli endured another slow start to his season. He won a close match against Stan Wawrinka at the United Cup[43] before going on a four match losing streak. This included a first round loss in Australia to qualifier Arthur Fery.[44]

Cobolli then made the semifinals at Delray Beach, where he lost to eventual champion Sebastian Korda.[45] He made it to the final at Acapulco the following week, defeating Frances Tiafoe to win his first hard court title, second ATP 500 title, and third ATP title overall. He rose to a career high of No. 15 as a result of the win.[46] Tiafoe would avenge this loss in the third round of Indian Wells.[47] Nevertheless, Cobolli won the mixed doubles tournament partnering Belinda Bencic.[6]

Cobolli endured early losses at Miami and Monte-Carlo. He upset world No. 3 and top seed Alexander Zverev in the semifinals of Munich, dedicating the win to a friend who had passed away the day before at the age of 13.[48] He lost in the final to Ben Shelton.[49]

At the Madrid Open, Cobolli defeated 10th seed Daniil Medvedev in the fourth round[50] before losing to Zverev in the quarterfinals.[51] He reached a new career high of No. 12, but lost in the third round of Rome to Thiago Agustín Tirante.[52] Attempting to defend his title in Hamburg, he lost in the first round to qualifier and eventual champion Ignacio Buse.[53]

Seeded 10th at the French Open, Cobolli defeated qualifier Andrea Pellegrino,[54] Wu Yibing,[55] and 18th seed Learner Tien to reach the fourth round of a major for the second time.[56] He defeated Zachary Svajda to reach his second major quarterfinal and first at Roland Garros.[57] He defeated Félix Auger-Aliassime in four sets to reach his first major semifinal.[58]
